Description

The Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT), also known as Serum Glutamic Pyruvic Transaminase (SGPT), test measures the level of ALT enzyme in the blood. This enzyme is primarily found in the liver, and elevated levels are a sensitive indicator of liver injury or disease, including hepatitis, fatty liver disease, and drug-induced liver damage. The test is routinely included in liver function panels to aid in diagnosis, monitor disease progression, and evaluate the effectiveness of treatment.
