The Alpha Feto Protein (AFP) serum test measures the concentration of AFP, a protein produced primarily by the fetal liver and yolk sac during development. In adults, elevated AFP levels can indicate hepatocellular carcinoma, germ cell tumors, or liver diseases such as hepatitis and cirrhosis. In pregnancy, this test is also used as part of maternal screening to assess fetal development and detect neural tube defects or chromosomal abnormalities.
